Sebaceous Cyst in the Male Groin: What to Know

A sebaceous cyst, more accurately often called an epidermoid cyst, is an enclosed sac beneath the skin that contains keratin. In the male groin, it may rub against clothing, hair, or nearby skin and become more noticeable. It can feel smooth and rounded, but appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

A lump in the groin skin may be confused with an ingrown hair, abscess, or a deeper groin problem. A clinician can check whether it sits in the skin or deeper tissue and can examine nearby genital skin when needed. Do not assume every groin lump is a cyst.

Keep the skin clean and avoid squeezing, piercing, shaving over, or repeatedly pressing the lump. A warm clean compress can soothe discomfort when the skin is intact. A clinician may discuss observation, a steroid injection into the skin for selected inflammation, drainage if an abscess has formed, or cyst removal when the sac keeps causing trouble.

Arrange medical review for a lump that is growing, recurring, painful, warm, red, or draining. Seek urgent help if redness spreads, pus collects, fever develops, pain becomes severe, or swelling interferes with urination, walking, sexual activity, or another nearby function. These warning signs call for assessment because a skin lump can have causes other than a cyst.

Ask whether the lump is consistent with an epidermoid cyst, whether it is inflamed or infected, and which treatment fits its location. Ask about wound care, recurrence, scarring, and the changes that should prompt an earlier review.
