What should you know about seborrhoeic wart dermoscopy?

The term seborrhoeic wart commonly refers to seborrhoeic keratosis, a non-contagious growth that may look rough, waxy, or stuck onto the skin. It is different from a viral wart. Because several skin lesions can share a similar surface, a clinician considers the growth's shape, colour, borders, surface, and history rather than relying on the nickname alone.

A dermatoscope provides magnification and lighting that reveal details not easily visible at arm's length. The clinician may examine the lesion without touching it or place the device gently against the skin, then decide between observation, removal, or tissue analysis. Keep the area intact before review and mention any recent change, repeated irritation, or bleeding.

Arrange prompt assessment when a raised growth changes in size, outline, colour, or texture, bleeds unexpectedly, crusts repeatedly, or becomes persistently sore. Urgent review is appropriate for heavy bleeding, rapidly spreading redness, or severe pain. A lesion that cannot be confidently identified should be examined even if it does not hurt.

Ask whether the growth has features of seborrhoeic keratosis, whether a viral wart is plausible, and what would make a biopsy or removal useful. Ask how to monitor it and which specific changes should prompt an earlier appointment.
