Seasonal conjunctivitis treatment: what to know

Treatment depends on whether itching and watering fit an allergic pattern, whether there is discharge, and whether vision is affected. A clinician may examine the eye surface and ask about outdoor exposure, contact lenses, medicines, and symptoms in the nose. Conjunctivitis can have allergic, infectious, or irritant causes, and these do not all need the same treatment.

Avoid the suspected allergen where practical, do not rub the eyes, and use a cool compress on closed lids. Pause contact lenses while the eyes are inflamed. A pharmacist or GP may recommend allergy-focused eye drops or another medicine after checking your symptoms and medical history; follow the product instructions and do not use someone else’s drops.

Antibiotic Treatment is used for selected bacterial infections, not for an allergic reaction. Using an antibiotic without a clear indication can delay recognition of the real cause and may irritate the eye. A GP Consultation is useful when symptoms are persistent, recurrent, or difficult to distinguish from infection.

Get prompt medical advice for eye pain, pronounced light sensitivity, a change in vision, significant swelling, an eye injury, or symptoms in a contact-lens wearer that are worsening. Arrange routine assessment when symptoms keep returning or do not improve with trigger avoidance and appropriate advice.
