Screen motion sickness: what to know

Short answer
Screen motion sickness occurs when moving images suggest motion while the body is still, creating sensory conflict that can trigger nausea, dizziness, sweating, or vomiting.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical trigger
- Moving visual content while the body remains still
- First response
- Stop the content and look at a stable distant object
- Get reviewed
- Frequent episodes or symptoms away from screens
Why screens can trigger it
Your eyes may register rapid movement in a game, video, vehicle display, or scrolling feed while the balance organs and muscles report that you are sitting still. The mismatch can affect the brain’s sense of movement. Symptoms may include nausea, dizziness, headache, sweating, pallor, tiredness, or vomiting. Fast camera movement, close viewing, visual clutter, and using a screen in a moving vehicle can make the mismatch stronger.
The experience can resemble travel sickness, but it may happen without physical travel. Symptoms often ease when the visual motion stops and may return when the same content resumes.
How to reduce symptoms
Stop the moving content as soon as symptoms begin and look at a stable object in the distance. Sit upright, keep the screen farther away, lower brightness, increase text size, and avoid rapid scrolling or camera movement. Use shorter sessions with breaks, and avoid reading on a screen while travelling. Fresh air and small sips of fluid may help. If episodes recur, a clinician or pharmacist can discuss suitable options; some medicines can cause drowsiness.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for sudden severe dizziness, fainting, chest pain, new weakness, trouble speaking, severe headache, inability to keep fluids down, or symptoms that continue after the screen is stopped. Arrange a medical review if episodes are frequent, occur without screen exposure, affect walking or hearing, or lead to repeated vomiting. A travel health consultation may help if symptoms repeatedly interfere with journeys.
Questions for your doctor
Does this pattern fit screen motion sickness or another balance problem? Could my medicines, vision, migraine history, or inner-ear symptoms contribute? What settings and breaks should I try? Is a medicine appropriate before travel, and could it make me drowsy?

Questions people ask
Why does a video make me feel sick when I am sitting still?
The eyes detect movement while the balance system and body detect stillness. This sensory mismatch can produce motion-sickness symptoms.
Can screen motion sickness cause vomiting?
Yes. Nausea can progress to vomiting, especially when visual movement continues or the person is already travelling.
