What should you know about scratching cradle cap?

Cradle cap, also called infantile seborrheic dermatitis, often appears as yellow, white, or greasy scale on the scalp. It may be mild, but a baby can rub the area because of dryness, warmth, or irritation. Picking firmly can pull at delicate skin, cause bleeding, and increase the chance of infection. Flakes may return even when the scalp is cared for well.

Cradle cap is limited to the skin and is not caused by poor hygiene. If the rash extends beyond the scalp or the baby seems unwell, another diagnosis may need consideration.

Use a mild baby shampoo and rinse thoroughly. Massage with fingertips, never fingernails, then use a soft brush to lift only loose flakes. Do not scrape, pick, or use adult dandruff products unless a clinician recommends them. Contact a clinician if the scalp is bleeding, oozing, very red, swollen, painful, or developing crusts, or if the baby has a fever or seems unusually unsettled.
