What does scoliosis mean in adolescents?

Short answer
In adolescents, scoliosis means a sideways spinal curve with rotation that may need monitoring during growth.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- What changes
- The spine curves sideways and may rotate
- Why follow-up matters
- Growth can change the curve over time
Understanding the curve
A developing curve can make one shoulder, waist or hip look higher than the other, or cause the ribs to appear more prominent when the teenager bends forward. Many adolescents notice no pain. Scoliosis is not caused by carrying a school bag or by ordinary sitting posture, and a visible unevenness does not show how severe a curve is. A clinical examination and, when needed, imaging help describe the curve and whether growth remains.
The key question is how the spine behaves as the adolescent grows. Some curves remain stable, while others progress. The care plan may involve observation, physiotherapy, a brace or surgical discussion according to the curve, skeletal maturity and the young person's needs.
What assessment may involve
Book an appointment if a family member or school screening notices uneven shoulders, a tilted waist or a rib prominence. Bring a list of symptoms and any earlier reports. Encourage ordinary activity unless a clinician advises otherwise; supervised exercises can support strength, confidence and movement, even though exercise does not reshape every curve. Follow-up timing is individual and often matters most while growth continues.
When to seek care promptly
Seek prompt medical assessment for new leg weakness, loss of balance, numbness, difficulty controlling bladder or bowel function, breathing difficulty, severe night pain, fever or a rapidly changing appearance. Back pain after significant injury also deserves timely review. Most posture changes are not emergencies, but neurological or systemic symptoms should not be attributed to scoliosis without examination.
Questions for the care team
Where is the curve, and how will it be monitored? Is growth still remaining? Would physiotherapy or bracing fit this pattern? Which activities are encouraged? What changes should lead us to return sooner?

Questions people ask
Does scoliosis always cause back pain?
No. Many adolescents with scoliosis have no pain, so symptoms and examination both guide care.
Can an adolescent with scoliosis stay active?
Usually ordinary activity is encouraged, with restrictions only when a clinician identifies a specific reason.
