SCFE affects the growth plate between the upper thigh bone and the hip joint. A specialist reviews how pain began, watches walking, checks hip movement, and compares both sides. Pain may be felt in the groin, thigh, or knee, so a knee complaint can still need a hip assessment. X-rays usually guide the diagnosis, while further imaging may be considered when findings are unclear.

Stop sports, running, jumping, and unnecessary walking until reviewed. Use crutches or another aid only as directed, and do not force the hip through painful movement. Bring medication details and note whether the limp, pain, or ability to bear weight has changed. If SCFE is confirmed, the usual goal is to secure the affected growth plate; fixation surgery may be discussed by the orthopaedic team.

Go to urgent care if a child with hip, thigh, or knee pain cannot bear weight, develops marked pain after a small movement, or has a rapidly changing limp. A sudden increase in symptoms can signal additional movement at the growth plate. Keep the leg supported and avoid testing it repeatedly while arranging transport.
