Short answer

SCFE management usually starts with strict protection from weight-bearing, urgent orthopaedic review, and treatment to stabilise the slipped growth plate.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Early priority
Keep weight off the affected leg
Treatment focus
Stabilise the growth plate
Follow-up
Monitor healing, movement and both hips

How management is planned

The plan depends on whether the slip is stable, how much the femoral head has shifted, whether one or both hips are involved, and how the child can move safely. A clinician combines symptoms, hip movement and imaging rather than relying on pain intensity alone. The central concern is preventing further displacement and protecting the hip joint. Later reviews check healing, movement, leg function and signs of joint irritation. The opposite hip may be monitored because growth plates do not always mature at the same pace.

Practical next steps

Stop running, jumping and sport as soon as SCFE is suspected. Keep weight off the leg using mobility equipment selected by the treating team. Stabilisation commonly uses a screw or another fixation method to hold the femoral head while the growth plate closes; the surgeon will explain the approach, positioning and follow-up. Recovery instructions may cover wound care, permitted transfers, school arrangements and a gradual return to strengthening. Keep every imaging and orthopaedic appointment, even when walking becomes easier.

When to seek care

Get urgent help for a new or worsening limp, increasing hip or knee pain, or difficulty bearing weight. Emergency care is needed when pain is sudden and severe, the child cannot stand, or the leg appears newly turned outward. After treatment, contact the care team for fever, increasing wound redness or drainage, new numbness, worsening pain, or a sudden change in walking. Do not restart sport based only on reduced pain.

Questions for your doctor

Is the slip stable? What procedure is recommended and why? How long will weight-bearing be restricted? How will the other hip be followed? What milestones are required before physiotherapy, school activities and sport?

Questions people ask

Can SCFE be managed with rest alone?

Rest may protect the hip while care is arranged, but a confirmed slip needs orthopaedic treatment planning to prevent further displacement.

When can sports resume after SCFE treatment?

Return is gradual and depends on healing, hip movement, strength and clearance from the treating team.
