Scarlet fever: symptoms, care, and warning signs

The rash often feels rough, like fine sandpaper, and may be more noticeable in skin folds. The tongue can look coated and later appear redder, while the throat may be painful and the neck glands tender. Symptoms can overlap with other infections, so appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis. Scarlet fever presents with these features in some people, but not every sore throat or rash is scarlet fever. A clinician considers the examination and the pattern of symptoms together.

Arrange a clinical review when fever, sore throat, and a rough rash occur together, especially in a child. Encourage fluids and rest, and use age-appropriate fever or pain relief only as directed on the label or by a clinician. Do not share cups, utensils, towels, or toothbrushes while the illness is being assessed. If antibiotic treatment is prescribed, follow the directions and complete the course unless the prescriber changes it. Keep notes on fever, rash progression, drinking, and urination.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow fluids, severe dehydration, confusion, unusual drowsiness, a rapidly worsening appearance, or a rash that does not fade when pressed.
