Scarlet fever in adults: what to know

In adults, scarlet fever may begin with a sore throat, feeling feverish, headache or tiredness. A fine, rough rash can spread over the trunk and skin folds; the face may look flushed while the area around the mouth stays paler. The tongue may first look coated and later become red and prominent. Adults may mistake these symptoms for another throat infection, so the pattern and examination are useful. Scarlet fever is associated with the bacteria that cause Strep Throat and can spread through close contact or respiratory droplets.

Contact a clinician if you have a sore throat with a rough rash or fever, especially after close contact with an ill person. Rest, drink regularly and avoid sharing drinks, food or towels. Wash hands and cover coughs and sneezes. If Antibiotic Treatment is prescribed, take it as instructed and check when you may safely return to work or normal close contact. Do not use leftover antibiotics because the choice depends on your assessment and medical history.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow fluids or saliva, confusion, fainting, severe weakness or rapidly worsening swelling in the throat or neck. Seek prompt review if the fever is not settling, the rash is changing quickly, or you are unable to maintain hydration. Pregnancy, immune suppression or a significant long-term illness should lower the threshold for contacting a clinician.
