Scarlet Fever and Age

Children often present with fever, sore throat, swollen glands, and a fine rough rash, but adults can develop the same infection. Younger children may show irritability, poor feeding, or reduced drinking rather than clearly describing throat pain. Older children and adults may report headache, body aches, or painful swallowing. Age changes how symptoms are described and how quickly dehydration can develop; it does not diagnose scarlet fever. Strep Throat is a related condition that may produce similar throat symptoms.

Arrange a healthcare assessment when fever and sore throat occur with a rough red rash, especially if a child is drinking less or seems unusually sleepy. Offer frequent fluids, rest, and foods that are easy to swallow. Do not use another person's medicine or save antibiotics for later. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow saliva, severe drowsiness, confusion, fainting, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine.
