Scaly skin in the ears: what to know

Flaking on the outer ear can follow dry skin, contact irritation or seborrheic dermatitis. Psoriasis may affect the ear rim and entrance. Scaling with itch can also be caused by infection, including ringworm on nearby skin; tinea versicolor is less typical in the ear. Ear symptoms can be hard to judge with a mirror. A clinician can inspect the canal and eardrum, check for trapped debris and separate skin irritation from an ear infection.

Keep water and shampoo out while the skin is irritated, then dry the outer ear gently. Do not use cotton buds, fingernails, oils, peroxide or leftover ear drops inside the canal. Arrange prompt assessment for ear pain, pus, blood, foul odour, blocked hearing, ringing, dizziness, fever or worsening swelling. Seek urgent help for sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness, facial weakness, or swelling spreading around the ear. Recurrent outer-ear scale also merits review, particularly with psoriasis or scalp symptoms.

Ask whether the scaling is on the outer ear or in the canal, whether infection is present, and which product is safe for that exact location.
