Scaly Bumps on Skin: What They May Mean and What to Do

Scaling means that the outer skin is shedding more visibly than usual. Bumps may be raised, rough, itchy, red, darker, or lighter than nearby skin. A photograph and examination can help a clinician distinguish a rash from an infection or another skin problem.

Dry skin or contact with a product, detergent, friction, or sweat can leave rough, flaky bumps. An inflammatory condition such as [Psoriasis](/conditions/psoriasis/) can create well-defined, scaly plaques; [Seborrheic Dermatitis](/conditions/seborrheic-dermatitis/) often affects the scalp, eyebrows, sides of the nose, or other oily areas. A fungal infection such as [Ringworm](/conditions/ringworm/) may form an expanding, scaly edge, while [Tinea Versicolor](/conditions/tinea-versicolor/) can cause fine scaling with altered skin colour.

Wash gently with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry. Avoid picking, scrubbing, fragranced products, and sharing towels or clothing until the cause is clearer.

Do not use a steroid cream or an antifungal product on an uncertain rash without advice, because the wrong treatment can mask features or irritate the area. Arrange a dermatology or primary-care assessment if the bumps are spreading, recurring, very itchy, painful, cracked, oozing, or not settling with gentle skin care. Seek prompt care for rapidly increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, facial or eye involvement, or a widespread rash after starting a medicine. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the lips or tongue.

Before an appointment, note when the bumps began, where they started, whether they form a ring or a defined plaque, and which products or treatments have touched the skin. Bring clear photos if the appearance changes.

Ask: What features point to irritation, psoriasis, dermatitis, or fungal infection? Would a skin scraping or another test help? Which cleanser and moisturiser suit this area? Should I avoid close contact or shared towels? How long should I use the recommended treatment, and what changes mean I should return?
