Scalp folliculitis and hair loss

Inflammation around a hair follicle can make the scalp sore, itchy, crusted, or dotted with pimples. Hair may shed more visibly during a flare, or hairs may break when crusts are rubbed. Hair loss has many possible causes, so thinning does not establish folliculitis by itself. Sudden smooth patches, widening areas, or loss without bumps may point to another process and should be examined.

Clean gently, avoid picking crusts, and pause tight hairstyles, harsh chemicals, and close shaving over active bumps. Do not share combs, brushes, or clippers. Photograph changes in the same light and note pain, pus, itch, and the timing of shedding. Arrange a dermatology appointment for continuing shedding, tender or draining bumps, scabs, or any smooth, shiny, or scar-like patch. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, increasing swelling, severe pain, fever, or a rapidly enlarging lesion. Early assessment helps separate folliculitis from other causes of hair loss.

Ask whether the hair change is shedding, breakage, or follicle loss; whether testing is needed; and what grooming changes may reduce irritation. Mention recent illness, medicines, supplements, hairstyles, and chemical treatments.
