What should you know about SBRT for the lung?

Lung SBRT uses precisely aimed radiation to treat a selected lung target while limiting dose to surrounding healthy tissue. It is often discussed when a target is small and localised, or when surgery may not be suitable because of its position or a person's health. The team considers scans, breathing, lung function, previous treatment and whether the target is close to the chest wall or other organs.

Planning scans map the target as it moves with breathing. You may be asked to hold your breath, breathe in a controlled way or use image guidance while a [Linear Accelerator](/technology/linear-accelerator/) delivers beams from several angles. This is a form of [Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy](/treatments/radiation-oncology/stereotactic-body-radiotherapy/). You lie still while the machine works; the radiation is not felt. Tiredness, cough, chest discomfort or shortness of breath can occur, sometimes after a delay. Inflammation in nearby lung tissue is one reason follow-up matters.

Tell the team about breathlessness, oxygen use, lung disease, implanted devices, blood thinners and previous chest treatment. Bring your medicine list and ask which medicines to take on treatment days. Arrange help if you are likely to be tired, and keep follow-up imaging appointments because treated lung tissue can change in appearance while healing. Report increasing breathlessness, a new or worsening cough, chest pain, fever, coughing blood, dizziness or a sudden drop in exercise tolerance. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, fainting or significant bleeding. Do not assume new chest symptoms are simply treatment effects; an assessment can distinguish inflammation, infection, clotting and other causes.

Ask why SBRT is being recommended, how breathing movement will be managed, what nearby structures need protection, and how lung function affects the plan. Ask how the treatment compares with surgery for you, which symptoms need urgent review, and when imaging will be interpreted.
