Short answer

Coccydynia is pain around the coccyx, or tailbone, often aggravated by sitting, leaning backward, or moving from sitting to standing.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Pain location
Around the coccyx at the base of the spine
Common aggravator

Reducing pressure while maintaining comfortable movement

What it means

The coccyx sits at the lower end of the spine and can become irritated after a fall, childbirth, prolonged pressure, or repeated strain. Pain may feel aching or sharp and can be local or spread into nearby buttock tissue. Sitting on a hard surface, driving, and bowel movements may increase discomfort. A clinician may examine the area and consider other causes when pain is persistent, unusual, or accompanied by neurological or systemic symptoms.

Recovery varies with the trigger and the tissues involved. Avoiding direct pressure does not mean complete bed rest; comfortable movement helps prevent additional stiffness.

What you can do

Use a coccyx cushion with a cut-out or wedge so pressure is shifted away from the painful area. Sit with your back supported, change position regularly, and try lying on your side when resting. Cold or warmth may help, depending on which feels better. A physiotherapist can address sitting posture, pelvic movement, and surrounding muscle tension. If symptoms continue, a clinician may discuss medication or a cortisone injection after checking that it is suitable.

When to seek care

Arrange medical assessment for pain that follows significant trauma, continues despite sensible adjustments, or interferes with sleep and daily activities. Seek urgent help for new leg weakness, numbness around the groin, loss of bladder or bowel control, fever, or rapidly increasing swelling or redness. Rectal bleeding or unexplained weight change also needs prompt evaluation rather than being attributed to tailbone pain.

Questions for your doctor

What may be causing my coccyx pain? Do I need an examination or imaging? Which cushion and sitting position should I use? Would physiotherapy help, and when would an injection be considered?

Questions people ask

Can a cushion help coccydynia?

A cushion that reduces direct pressure on the coccyx may make sitting more comfortable, especially when paired with regular position changes.

When is an injection considered?

A clinician may consider a cortisone injection when pain persists after assessment and non-invasive measures have not provided enough relief.
