Rubella IgG test: what to know

A positive, negative or equivocal result is interpreted against the laboratory's reference range and your history. IgG does not alone prove that a current rash is rubella; recent infection may need other assessment. The test can be relevant when reviewing pregnancy plans, possible exposure or uncertain MMR records. A clinician may combine the result with symptoms and vaccination history.

Ask the ordering clinician to explain the report rather than relying on one label. Bring vaccine records and note any rash, fever, swollen glands or joint pain. Discuss whether MMR vaccination, repeat testing or another test is suitable. Mention pregnancy, plans to conceive and immune-system conditions.

Contact a GP promptly for a new rash with fever or possible exposure. Seek urgent advice after exposure during pregnancy, even without strong symptoms, because rubella can affect an unborn baby. Emergency care is needed for breathing trouble, fainting, confusion or severe deterioration; a test result should not delay help.

Ask what the laboratory range means, whether the result suggests immunity, whether recent infection needs different testing, and how pregnancy plans affect vaccination decisions.
