What should you know about a round lung nodule?

A nodule may reflect a healed infection, inflammation, scar tissue, or another non-cancerous change. It may also represent cancer, but an image alone cannot establish that diagnosis. Radiologists assess its size, edges, density, location, and whether it changes on comparison scans.

The care team also considers smoking history, previous cancer, exposure history, symptoms, and overall health. A round shape is one imaging feature; it is not a conclusion about the cause.

Depending on the findings, your team may recommend interval imaging, specialist review, or a [Biopsy](/treatments/diagnostics-and-staging/biopsy/) to examine cells or tissue.

Keep a record of cough, chest discomfort, breathlessness, coughing blood, fever, and weight change, and share your smoking and medical history accurately. Do not stop prescribed treatment or miss planned imaging without contacting the clinic.

Contact your care team if breathing symptoms, chest pain, persistent cough, fever, or unexplained weight change develops or worsens. Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, coughing significant blood, sudden chest pain, fainting, or blue lips. These symptoms need attention regardless of what the nodule ultimately represents.
