What should you know about a round lump on the side of your neck?

The side of the neck contains chains of lymph nodes as well as muscles, blood vessels, nerves, salivary tissue, and the thyroid region. A swollen node may follow an infection in the throat, ear, teeth, or skin. A neck lump can also be a presentation of head and neck cancer, lymphoma, thyroid cancer, or cancer of unknown primary; its position does not establish which cause is present.
