What should you know about rotaviral gastroenteritis treatments?

Rotavirus can inflame the gut and cause watery diarrhoea, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain, nausea, and loss of appetite. The main concern is fluid and salt loss, especially in babies, young children, older adults, and people who cannot drink reliably. Treatment is usually supportive: the illness needs time while the body clears the infection. Antibiotics do not treat a viral cause, and medicines to stop diarrhoea or vomiting are not suitable for everyone, particularly children.

Offer frequent small sips of an oral rehydration solution, following its preparation instructions. Continue breastfeeding or usual age-appropriate feeds when tolerated; do not dilute formula unless a clinician tells you to. Once appetite returns, offer simple familiar foods and avoid forcing meals. Wash hands with soap and water after toileting or changing nappies and before preparing food. Clean soiled surfaces and avoid sharing towels. A clinician can advise on fluids, feeding, and whether assessment is needed.

Get urgent help for unusual sleepiness, confusion, a very dry mouth, no tears, markedly reduced urination, inability to keep fluids down, blood in stool, severe abdominal pain, breathing difficulty, or a child who is difficult to wake. Seek prompt advice when diarrhoea or vomiting is persistent, fever is concerning, or the person has a condition that increases dehydration risk. Do not wait for thirst alone; young children may become dehydrated before they can explain how they feel.
