Roseola, rubella and rubeola: how they differ

Roseola is commonly associated with a fever followed by a fine rash as the fever settles, particularly in young children. Rubella, also called German measles, is a contagious viral illness that may cause a fine rash, swollen glands, mild fever, or joint pain. Rubeola is the medical name for measles, a different and potentially serious infection that can cause fever, cough, runny nose, sore eyes, and a spreading rash.

The illnesses overlap in appearance, especially early on. Vaccination history, exposure, symptoms before the rash, and examination help distinguish them. Rubella is especially important to identify around pregnancy because infection during pregnancy can harm an unborn baby.

Contact a GP for an assessment if you develop a new rash with fever, swollen glands, joint pain, cough, or sore eyes, or if you have been exposed to a suspected case. Call ahead before attending a clinic so staff can reduce contact with other patients. Avoid sharing towels and keep distance from pregnant people until a clinician advises you about possible contagious infection.

Check your vaccination record and discuss whether MMR vaccination is appropriate. Do not rely on a rash photograph alone to decide whether you are infectious or need treatment.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, confusion, severe drowsiness, dehydration, a stiff neck, seizures, or rapidly worsening illness. Get prompt medical advice for a rash during pregnancy or after close contact with suspected rubella or rubeola, even if symptoms seem mild.
