What should you know about ROS1-positive lung cancer?

ROS1-positive means testing found a ROS1 rearrangement or other ROS1 alteration in the tumour sample. This finding can help the oncology team choose treatment that targets the affected pathway. It does not by itself describe how far the cancer has spread, how someone feels, or how treatment will work for that person.

The team combines the result with pathology, imaging, symptoms, and other tumour findings. Cancer may be present in the chest or in other areas, including the brain, so staging and symptom review remain important. A treatment plan can be revised if the tumour changes or a medicine causes troublesome effects.

Ask which ROS1 alteration was detected, how the result was confirmed, and whether other genomic findings matter. Discuss the treatment goal, how the medicine is taken, and how scans and appointments will assess its effect. Keep a record of doses, new medicines, and symptoms so the team can identify side effects early.

Targeted treatment may be used alone or in a sequence with radiotherapy, surgery, or chemotherapy, depending on stage and response. Palliative care can help with pain, breathlessness, fatigue, sleep, and emotional support while cancer-directed treatment continues.

Call the treatment team promptly for new or worsening breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, persistent vomiting, severe diarrhoea, confusion, a new headache, weakness, or a seizure. Go to emergency care for severe breathing difficulty, collapse, or sudden neurological symptoms. Report persistent or worsening hoarseness for assessment.
