What should you know about ROS1-negative lung cancer?

A negative ROS1 result means the test did not identify the ROS1 change it was designed to detect in the tested sample. It does not describe the cancer as harmless, and it does not by itself show the stage or predict how an individual will respond. Test method, sample quality, and the other results in the tumour profile can matter.

Your team may consider other genomic findings, the lung cancer subtype, scan results, symptoms, and your general health. Those details can guide surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or another treatment approach. A negative result should therefore be read as one piece of the diagnosis, not as the end of treatment planning.

Ask for a plain-language explanation of the report and whether the sample was sufficient. Discuss whether broader genomic tumour profiling is appropriate and which other results affect treatment. Bring a current medicine list and mention previous treatments, allergies, breathing problems, and any new neurological symptoms.

Treatment monitoring may include scans, examinations, and blood tests. Keep appointments even when symptoms are mild, because changes on imaging or in test results can alter the plan before you feel different. Supportive and palliative care may help with symptoms and daily function alongside anticancer treatment.

Tell your clinical team promptly about increasing breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, fever during treatment, repeated vomiting, confusion, a new severe headache, weakness, or a seizure. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, or sudden neurological changes. Persistent hoarseness also deserves assessment, especially when it is new or worsening.
