What should you know about ROS1 lung cancer treatment?

ROS1 is a gene involved in a rearrangement that can drive some lung cancers. A tumour sample may be examined through genomic tumour profiling. The result is one part of the diagnosis; scans and pathology show where the cancer is and what type of lung cancer is present. A ROS1-positive result can make a ROS1-directed medicine a central treatment discussion. A ROS1-negative result means that treatment decisions rely on other tumour features and clinical findings.

Treatment may be used to control cancer in the lungs or elsewhere. If cancer has reached the brain, the plan may include brain-directed treatment as well as treatment that travels through the bloodstream. The aim and sequence can change if the cancer responds, causes new symptoms, or becomes resistant to a medicine.

Ask whether the tumour sample was adequate, which ROS1 test was used, and whether other genomic findings could affect the plan. Treatment options may include targeted treatment, radiotherapy, surgery such as a lung lobectomy, chemotherapy, or combinations given in a deliberate order. Your oncology team may use scans, examination, and blood tests to judge response and side effects.

Keep a written list of medicines and report new symptoms early. Do not stop an anticancer medicine without discussing it with the prescribing team. Palliative care can be added at any stage to help with breathlessness, pain, fatigue, appetite, sleep, or emotional strain; it does not mean that cancer treatment has ended.

Contact your cancer team promptly for worsening breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, persistent vomiting, confusion, a new severe headache, weakness, or a seizure. Hoarseness that persists or changes should also be assessed. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, collapse, or sudden neurological symptoms.
