What should you know about rodent ulcer skin cancer?

The name may refer to a spot that slowly enlarges, crusts, bleeds, or forms an ulcer. Basal cell carcinoma often develops on sun-exposed skin such as the face, ears, scalp, neck, or hands. It can look like a shiny bump, a persistent sore, or a scaly patch, so appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis. A clinician may examine the area with magnification and take a small biopsy. Sun-damaged skin can increase the need for careful skin checks, and a skin lump has many possible causes.

Arrange a dermatology assessment for a sore or changing mark that does not heal. Do not pick the crust or repeatedly treat it with an over-the-counter wart or rash product. Take a clear photograph and note when the change began, whether it bleeds, and any previous skin cancers. Treatment depends on the site, size, depth, and microscopic findings. Options may include surgical excision, Mohs surgery, radiotherapy, photodynamic therapy, or imiquimod treatment.

Seek prompt medical advice for repeated bleeding, a growing ulcer, increasing pain, spreading redness, or a wound that remains open. Seek urgent care if bleeding will not stop after firm pressure, or if you develop fever with rapidly worsening redness or swelling. Urgency comes from the warning sign itself; it does not depend on assuming what the mark is.

Ask whether the lesion needs a biopsy, which treatment fits its location, how much surrounding tissue may be removed, and how the area will be monitored afterward.
