Discuss medicines, allergies, previous clots, other illnesses and your usual activity with the surgical team. Plan transport and help with shopping, bathing and stairs. Remove trip hazards and place a firm chair and commonly used items where they are easy to reach.

Rehabilitation focuses on restoring knee bend, straightening, thigh strength and a steady walking pattern. Use the prescribed exercises and walking aid, manage swelling as advised and attend reviews. Improvement is gradual, and the plan may change if pain, stiffness or strength develops differently than expected.

Contact your team about increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, sudden pain or a new inability to put weight through the leg. Prompt assessment is needed for calf swelling and tenderness. Get emergency help for chest pain, sudden breathlessness, fainting, or a foot that is cold, pale or weak.
