Ringworm under a microscope: what to know

A clinician may gently scrape scale from the active edge of a rash and place the sample on a slide with a preparation that makes fungal elements easier to see. The sample comes from the skin surface; it is not an operation. Fungal threads or spores can support ringworm, while a negative view may mean the sample was limited or that another condition is responsible. The result is interpreted alongside the rash’s shape, location, and course.
