Ringworm side effects in humans

A ringworm infection can cause itching, redness, scaling, cracking or a raised border. Scratching may break the skin and create soreness or allow bacteria to enter. Some people have mild symptoms, while others notice several patches or irritation in warm, moist skin folds. Hair-bearing areas can develop temporary hair loss when the scalp is involved, and nail infection can make a nail thick or brittle. These effects are not unique to ringworm, so a skin rash or scaly skin change may need examination rather than self-diagnosis.

Wash hands after touching the area, keep skin dry, launder towels and clothing regularly, and avoid sharing personal items. A clinician may recommend Topical Antifungal Treatment for limited skin infection or Oral Antifungal Treatment when the site or extent calls for it. Do not use a steroid cream alone on a suspected fungal rash unless a clinician has advised it, because it can alter the appearance and allow infection to spread. Seek prompt medical care for fever, pus, rapidly increasing warmth or swelling, severe pain, or extensive blistering.
