Ringworm prevention around dogs

Ringworm is a fungal infection that can pass between animals and people through direct contact or contaminated hairs, bedding, brushes, and surfaces. A dog may have circular hair loss, scaling, crusting, or itching, but appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis. People exposed to an infected dog may develop an itchy, scaly, expanding rash; that symptom is a presentation of ringworm, not proof that every rash came from the dog. Children, older adults, and people with reduced immune protection may need extra care with exposure.

Have a veterinarian assess the dog and follow the animal treatment plan. Limit close contact while treatment is being arranged, especially cuddling or sharing sleeping spaces. Wash hands after handling the dog, wear disposable gloves for grooming or cleaning, and launder bedding and washable fabrics. Vacuum loose hair from floors and furniture, clean surfaces as advised, and keep brushes and blankets separate.
