Ringworm and over-the-counter treatment

How the structures involved in Ringworm differ from normal

Short answer

Over-the-counter antifungal treatment may help a small suspected ringworm patch, but the diagnosis and product instructions still matter.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Before choosing a product

Ringworm commonly causes an itchy, scaly or expanding patch, but eczema, psoriasis, contact dermatitis and other infections can resemble it. A product that contains an antifungal is different from a steroid cream used for inflammation. Combination products may not be suitable for every rash. Check the label, expiry date, age guidance and warnings, and ask a pharmacist if you are pregnant, treating a child, or taking other medicines.

Using treatment carefully

Clean and dry the skin, then apply the recommended amount to the affected area and nearby skin if the label advises this. Follow the full course on the product directions even when itching settles early. Wash hands after application, avoid covering the area with an airtight dressing unless advised, and do not share the tube. Keep towels and clothing separate, and wash them regularly. Do not apply products to the eyes, mouth or broken skin unless directed.

When self-treatment is not enough

See a clinician if the rash is spreading, painful, infected-looking, recurrent or not improving with correct use. Seek advice promptly for scalp, nail, genital or facial involvement, or if several people or pets may be affected. A clinician can decide whether a different diagnosis, prescription topical medicine or oral antifungal treatment is needed.

Questions to ask

Ask which active ingredient fits the suspected rash, how to apply it, what side effects to watch for, and when an examination should replace further self-treatment.

Questions people ask

Can I buy ringworm treatment without a prescription?

Some topical antifungal medicines are available without a prescription, but a pharmacist can help check whether the rash is suitable for self-care.

Should I stop when the itching stops?

Do not stop early unless the product instructions or a clinician tell you to; symptoms can settle before the fungus has cleared.
