Ringworm on the Torso: Symptoms and Next Steps

On the chest, abdomen, back or sides, ringworm may begin as a patch that gradually enlarges. The border can be raised or scaly, while the centre may look less inflamed. Itch is common, but the rash can also burn or feel dry. A torso rash is not automatically ringworm: eczema, psoriasis, allergic reactions and other infections can have overlapping features. A clinician may diagnose it from the examination and, when needed, test a small skin sample. Scratching can spread fungal material to other areas and may break the skin.

Gently wash the area, pat it dry, and wear loose clothing that does not keep sweat against the skin. Use a separate towel, avoid sharing clothing or bedding, and wash items that contact the rash. A pharmacist or clinician can recommend a topical antifungal treatment for suitable cases; apply it exactly as directed and continue for the advised duration. Do not use a steroid cream alone for an undiagnosed rash, since it may mask or worsen a fungal infection. Oral antifungal treatment may be prescribed when the area is widespread, difficult to treat, or not responding as expected.

Arrange an appointment when the rash is spreading, keeps returning, involves a large area, or fails to improve with appropriate antifungal care. Seek prompt attention for rapidly increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pus, significant pain, fever, or feeling generally unwell, as these can indicate a complication or a different condition. Get advice sooner if you have diabetes, take immune-suppressing medicine, or have a weakened immune system. Bring details of new products, recent travel, contact with affected people or animals, and any treatment already tried.
