Ringworm on the head after a haircut: what to know

Clippers, close shaving, fragranced products or small skin breaks can irritate the scalp after a haircut. Ringworm is a fungal infection that may cause itchy scaling, round patches, broken hairs or areas of hair loss; it may be noticed after a haircut without being caused by the haircut itself. Shared combs, brushes, hats and barber tools can spread fungi when hygiene is inadequate. A clinician can distinguish infection from irritation and check the scalp closely.

Avoid scratching, picking, or using another person’s comb, hat or towel. Keep personal hair tools separate and clean, and tell the barber if infection is suspected so equipment can be handled safely. Scalp ringworm commonly requires oral antifungal treatment because fungus can involve hair shafts; a topical product alone may not reach it adequately. Use any prescribed medicine exactly as directed, and do not share it. A medicated shampoo may reduce spread when recommended, but it does not replace the main treatment.

Book a prompt appointment if there is hair loss, broken hairs, a tender swollen area, crusting, pus, or a rash that is enlarging. Seek urgent medical advice for fever, severe pain, facial swelling, or rapidly worsening inflammation. Children and anyone with reduced immunity should be assessed early because scalp infection can affect hair growth and may spread to close contacts.
