Ringworm near private parts: what to know

Ringworm is a contagious fungal skin infection. Around the groin, it can cause a red or darker patch, scaling, burning, or itch, often with a clearer centre and a defined edge. Similar changes may come from thrush, irritation, eczema, or other infections. Skin on the genitals and inside the folds is sensitive, and a rash there may extend beyond the area people commonly call jock itch. A clinician can distinguish these possibilities and check whether the genital skin itself is involved.

Keep the area dry by changing out of damp clothing, drying gently after washing, and choosing loose breathable underwear. Wash hands before and after applying any medicine, and do not share towels, underwear, or clothing. Avoid scratching and avoid perfumed products that can worsen irritation. Do not use steroid cream by itself on a suspected fungal rash unless prescribed. A clinician may recommend topical antifungal treatment for suitable external skin; a wider, persistent, or difficult-to-treat infection may need oral antifungal treatment. Follow the full advised course even if the surface looks calmer.

Seek medical care promptly for severe pain, blisters, ulcers, pus, fever, rapidly spreading redness, or swelling of the genital area. Arrange an appointment if urination is painful, discharge is present, the rash follows sexual contact, or the diagnosis is uncertain. Review is also sensible when symptoms persist or recur after treatment.
