Ringworm in the pubic area: what to know

Dermatophyte fungi thrive on warm, damp outer skin and may cause redness, itch, a scaly border, or gradual spread from the groin toward the pubic region. Shaving, friction, sweat, fragranced products, folliculitis, yeast, eczema, and sexually transmitted infections can produce overlapping symptoms. A pubic rash is therefore not enough to identify ringworm. Note whether symptoms began after a new product, hair removal, exercise, close contact, or a shared towel, and tell the clinician about these details.

Keep the pubic skin clean and dry, pat rather than rub after washing, and change sweaty underwear promptly. Pause fragranced products and avoid scratching or shaving over irritated skin. Use separate towels and launder clothing and bedding. A clinician or pharmacist can advise whether a topical antifungal treatment fits the external rash; use it exactly as directed and keep it away from mucosal surfaces unless approved. Oral antifungal treatment may be considered when the infection is extensive, recurrent, or not responding.

Get prompt medical review for painful swelling, pus, open sores, blisters, fever, or redness that is spreading quickly. Seek assessment for discharge, urinary pain, pelvic or testicular pain, or concern about sexual exposure. Arrange follow-up if treatment irritates the skin, the rash persists, or symptoms return after clearing.

Ask whether the rash is on external skin or mucosal tissue, whether a fungal test or sexual-health test is appropriate, which products to stop, and how long treatment should continue.
