Ringworm in a private part: what to know

Fungal groin infection often begins in warm, moist skin folds and may extend onto the inner thighs or lower abdomen. The edge can be more active, scaly, or red than the centre. Genital itching or a rash can also come from yeast, irritation, eczema, psoriasis, or a sexually transmitted infection, so location alone does not identify the cause. Look for pain, discharge, sores, blisters, or urinary symptoms that suggest a different assessment. A clinician can inspect the skin and test scale when the diagnosis is uncertain.

Gently wash and dry the area, change out of damp clothing, choose breathable underwear, and avoid scratching. Do not share towels or clothing, and wash garments regularly. Avoid steroid-only creams unless a clinician advises them, because they can alter the appearance of a fungal rash. A topical antifungal treatment may be suitable for external skin when recommended and used as directed. Oral antifungal treatment is reserved for situations where a clinician considers it necessary. Keep products away from internal genital tissue unless labelled for that use.

Arrange prompt care for severe pain, rapidly spreading redness, pus, open sores, blisters, fever, or swelling. Seek assessment for discharge, pain when urinating, or a possible sexual exposure, because these symptoms need a broader evaluation. Review is also warranted if the rash does not improve with correctly used treatment or repeatedly returns.

Ask which skin surface is affected, whether testing is needed, whether a partner or household contact needs review, and how to distinguish fungal irritation from an STI or contact reaction.
