Ringworm in Calves: Signs and Care

The infection is caused by a fungus living in the outer skin. A patch may itch, become dry, and gradually widen, sometimes with clearer-looking skin toward its centre. One or several patches can occur, and the border may be raised or flaky. Eczema, contact irritation, psoriasis, and insect reactions can produce similar redness or scaling. Scratching can break the skin and add bacterial infection, which may bring crusting, warmth, or drainage.

Keep the calf clean and dry, wash hands after touching the patch, and avoid sharing towels or clothing. Do not apply a steroid cream by itself to an undiagnosed ring-shaped rash because it can alter the appearance and allow fungus to spread.
