Can ringworm occur without itching?

Itch varies with the body site, the degree of inflammation, and the person’s skin response. A fungal patch may instead be noticed because it enlarges, becomes scaly, feels dry, or has a more defined outer border. A smooth or non-itchy mark can also be caused by pigment change, eczema, irritation, or another skin condition. A ring shape alone is not proof, and the absence of itch does not rule ringworm in or out.

Observe its outline and surface, take a photograph, and avoid scratching or using several products at once. Keep the area dry and do not share towels, clothing, or equipment. For a limited patch that a pharmacist or clinician considers consistent with ringworm, topical antifungal treatment may be suitable. Oral treatment can be needed for extensive disease or certain sites. Use only as directed and allow time for leftover colour to settle after scale and growth have stopped.

Arrange an examination if the patch continues to enlarge, appears in multiple places, involves the scalp or nails, or fails to improve with the recommended treatment. Seek prompt help for pus, fever, increasing pain, warmth, swelling, or quick spread. A clinician can reconsider the diagnosis when a non-itchy mark remains unchanged or develops a new texture.
