How ringworm can look on dark skin

The colour of inflammation is not the only clue. Look for a patch that slowly enlarges, a scaly surface, a more noticeable outer edge, or a ring-like shape. The area may be darker or lighter after the infection settles, and this colour change can remain after the fungus has cleared. Ringworm can itch, but lack of itch does not exclude it. Eczema, contact irritation, pityriasis versicolor, and other conditions can resemble it, so a visual match is not enough for a confident diagnosis.

Take a clear photograph in consistent light so you can compare its size and border over time. Keep the skin dry, use a separate towel, and avoid applying bleaching products or unprescribed steroid mixtures. A clinician can examine the edge and scale and may recommend a topical antifungal for a limited patch. Oral antifungal treatment may be considered when infection is widespread, recurrent, or in a location where cream is unsuitable. Follow the directions and avoid stopping solely because the colour has begun to return to normal.

Seek assessment if a changing patch is on the face, scalp, nails, or genitals, or if it keeps enlarging despite treatment. Prompt review is needed for pain, pus, warmth, swelling, fever, or a rash that spreads quickly. A clinician should also check persistent light or dark marks when there is no active scale, because pigment change alone may have another cause.
