Can cows spread ringworm?

An infected cow may have round scaly patches, hair loss, or crusted areas, often around the head, neck, and body. Some animals show subtle signs. Handling an infected animal, touching contaminated grooming tools, or contacting bedding and fencing can transfer fungal material to human skin. A person may then develop an itchy, scaly patch that expands outward. The infection does not come from a worm and is not spread by the animal simply being nearby.

Wash exposed skin with soap and water, change and launder work clothing, and avoid sharing towels or equipment. Do not handle suspicious lesions with bare hands. Tell the farm manager or veterinarian if an animal has bald, crusted, or scaly patches so it can be assessed and managed. If a human rash appears, seek advice about topical or oral antifungal treatment rather than using an unlabelled animal product.

Arrange an assessment for a spreading rash, persistent scaling, or lesions on the face, scalp, hands, or nails. Seek prompt care for fever, pus, marked swelling, severe pain, or rapidly worsening redness. Children and people with reduced immunity should be assessed early after a suspicious exposure.
