Ringworm around the eye: what to know

Fungal infection can affect facial skin, but a scaly patch near the eye may also be eczema, contact irritation, blepharitis, or another condition. Swelling can make the eyelid feel heavy, and scratching can damage delicate skin. The eye surface and vision need separate attention from the skin around them.

Do not assume a ring-shaped patch is ringworm. A clinician can inspect the eyelid margin and surrounding skin, ask about new cosmetics or creams, and decide whether testing or specialist review is needed.

Keep hands clean, avoid rubbing the eye, and pause new makeup, false lashes, contact lenses, and fragranced products near the area. Do not share towels or face cloths. Use a separate clean towel for the face, and wash pillowcases and items that touch the patch.

Do not put antifungal cream, steroid cream, essential oils, or household remedies into the eye or on the eyelid unless a clinician specifically tells you to. Treatment may differ for skin beside the eye and the eyelid edge; a product suitable for an arm may not be suitable there.

Get urgent medical help for eye pain, blurred or reduced vision, light sensitivity, pain with eye movement, inability to open the eye, rapidly increasing swelling, fever, or redness spreading around the eye. Arrange a timely examination for a persistent, spreading, crusted, or weeping rash even without eye symptoms.

Ask whether the eyelid or eye surface is involved, which products are safe near it, and whether makeup or contact lenses should remain paused. Ask how to prevent transfer to the other eye or household members and what change should trigger urgent review.
