Ringworm on the ankle: what to know

On the ankle, ringworm may appear as a round or irregular patch with a more active raised edge and calmer-looking skin toward the centre. It can itch, peel, or crack, and its colour varies across skin tones. Nearby athlete's foot can spread fungus to the ankle, particularly when damp socks or footwear keep the skin moist.

Other rashes can resemble ringworm, including contact irritation and eczema. A clinician may examine the border and, when the diagnosis is uncertain, test surface scale rather than relying on the shape alone.

Wash gently, pat dry, and change damp socks promptly. Keep footwear clean and dry, avoid scratching, and do not share towels. Wash hands after touching the patch, and check the feet for scaling between the toes so a second site is not missed.

For a small area, a clinician or pharmacist may suggest topical antifungal treatment used exactly as directed. Wider, persistent, or difficult-to-reach infection may need oral antifungal treatment. Do not apply a steroid cream by itself unless advised, as it may hide the fungal pattern.

Seek medical advice if the patch keeps enlarging, returns, becomes painful, or fails to improve with appropriate treatment. Get prompt care for pus, increasing warmth, marked swelling, red streaks, fever, or a wound that is not healing. A rash near a joint that limits movement also warrants assessment.
