Right-side facial muscle weakness: what to know

Facial weakness can affect smiling, closing one eye, raising an eyebrow, or keeping liquid in the mouth. The timing and associated signs matter more than the side alone. Sudden facial weakness with trouble speaking, confusion, severe dizziness, vision change, or weakness or numbness in an arm or leg may indicate a stroke and requires emergency action. A clinician may also consider a facial nerve problem, an infection, or less commonly a wider muscle or nerve disorder. Weakness in the shoulder or arm has different possible causes, including a rotator cuff tear or cervical radiculopathy, and should be described separately.

If the weakness began suddenly, note the exact time you were last known to be well and call emergency services rather than driving yourself. Do not wait to see whether it passes. If the onset was gradual and there are no emergency signs, arrange prompt clinical review. Protect an eye that does not close by avoiding dust and rubbing, and ask a clinician or pharmacist about suitable eye care. Do not begin facial exercises, supplements, or treatment based only on an internet description. The assessment may include facial movements, limb strength, speech, sensation, and eye closure.

Call emergency services immediately for facial weakness with speech difficulty, arm or leg weakness, numbness, confusion, severe headache, loss of balance, or vision change. Seek urgent review if the eye cannot close, swallowing is difficult, or weakness is progressing. Even without these features, new facial weakness should be assessed promptly to identify the cause and protect the eye.

Ask whether the pattern involves the facial nerve, what warning signs to monitor, how to protect the eye, and whether you need neurological testing or follow-up. Mention recent infection, injury, medicines, and any weakness elsewhere.
