Right side flank pain radiating to the back

Flank pain is felt between the ribs and hip. Pain that moves toward the back may be related to a kidney or ureter problem, including Kidney Stones, or inflammation such as a Kidney Infection. A urinary infection can also cause discomfort, particularly when burning urination, urgency, cloudy urine, or fever occur. A strained back or abdominal muscle is another possibility, especially after lifting, exercise, coughing, or an awkward movement; this pain often changes with movement or pressing the area. The location alone cannot identify the cause.

Note when the pain began, whether it comes in waves or stays steady, and whether it moves toward the groin. Check for fever, nausea, vomiting, urine changes, or pain when passing urine. Rest from strenuous activity, drink normally unless a clinician has restricted fluids, and avoid repeatedly pressing the painful area. A clinician may examine your abdomen and back, test urine, and decide whether imaging or blood tests are appropriate.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening pain, fever with flank pain, repeated vomiting, faintness, confusion, blood in the urine, inability to pass urine, or a rigid or very tender abdomen. Arrange prompt assessment if pain persists, returns in episodes, or is accompanied by urinary symptoms. These warning signs can indicate infection, blockage, or another problem needing timely treatment.
