Right Leg Pain During Ovulation: What to Know

Ovulation can cause one-sided lower abdominal or pelvic discomfort when an ovary releases an egg. Irritation in the pelvis may be felt in the groin, hip, or upper leg rather than only at the ovary. Pain linked to the middle of the cycle is often short-lived, but the timing alone cannot identify its cause.

Endometriosis can present with pelvic pain that spreads to nearby areas, while an ovarian cyst can cause pressure or pain on one side. Muscle strain, a hip problem, nerve irritation, or a urinary or bowel condition can also produce leg pain. A clinician will consider the exact location, cycle pattern, examination findings, and other symptoms.

Keep a simple diary of the pain's side, start and end time, relation to your cycle, movement, sex, bowel movements, and bleeding. Rest from activities that worsen it, try gentle heat if comfortable, and use only pain relief that is suitable for you. A pelvic examination or ultrasound may be suggested when pain keeps returning or interferes with daily life.

Seek urgent care for sudden severe pain, fainting, a rigid or very tender abdomen, fever, repeated vomiting, heavy bleeding, new weakness, or trouble breathing. If pregnancy is possible, one-sided pelvic pain with bleeding or dizziness needs prompt assessment. Arrange a routine appointment for pain that persists, returns across cycles, or is accompanied by painful periods, pain during sex, or difficulty conceiving.

Ask whether the pattern fits ovulation pain or suggests an ovarian cyst, endometriosis, nerve irritation, or a musculoskeletal cause. Discuss whether an examination, pregnancy test, urine test, or pelvic ultrasound would help and what symptoms should prompt urgent review.
