How to get rid of blackheads

Short answer
Blackheads usually improve with gentle cleansing and a consistent pore-clearing plan rather than squeezing, scraping, or harsh scrubbing.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a blackhead is
A blackhead is an open comedone: oil and dead skin cells fill a hair follicle, and contact with air darkens the surface. The dark colour is not simply dirt. Blackheads commonly affect the nose, forehead, chin, chest, or back and can occur with other acne lesions.
Comedonal acne describes blocked pores without the deeper inflammation seen in painful nodules. Picking can injure the follicle, cause scabs or marks, and push material deeper. If many lesions recur despite careful care, a clinician can check for acne, medication effects, or products that may be clogging pores.
What may help
Wash gently with a non-abrasive cleanser, avoid squeezing, and choose non-comedogenic moisturiser and sunscreen. A topical retinoid helps normalise shedding inside follicles and is often introduced slowly to reduce dryness. Follow the product directions and discuss pregnancy or breastfeeding before starting a retinoid.
A trained professional may perform an acne extraction facial when individual comedones need removal, but extraction should be controlled and hygienic. Persistent or extensive acne may need prescription treatment; isotretinoin is reserved for selected cases and requires medical supervision, monitoring, and pregnancy precautions.
When to seek care
Book a dermatology review when blackheads are widespread, keep returning after a consistent routine, leave marks, or occur alongside painful spots, cysts, or scarring. Seek prompt advice for sudden severe acne, extensive irritation from a product, or signs of infection such as spreading redness, warmth, or pus.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether you have comedonal acne, which retinoid strength and schedule suit your skin, whether extraction is appropriate, and how to prevent irritation while treating the blocked pores.

Questions people ask
Are blackheads caused by dirt?
No. They form from oil and dead skin cells in an open follicle; the surface darkens through air exposure.
How long should I try a routine?
Pore-clearing products need consistent use and may irritate at first. A clinician can set a safe review point if lesions persist or worsen.
