What should you know about rib pain after kyphoplasty?

Kyphoplasty treats a vertebral compression fracture by creating space in the collapsed vertebra and placing bone cement. Afterward, soreness can come from the treated back, nearby muscles, positioning during the procedure, or altered movement while you recover. Pain felt around the ribs may also arise from another rib or chest condition, a new fracture, or irritation around the spine. The location alone cannot show which explanation applies. Tell the treating team when the pain began, whether it changes with breathing or movement, and whether it differs from your original fracture pain.

Follow the discharge instructions about activity, wound care, and prescribed medicines. Avoid lifting or twisting beyond the limits given by your clinician, and change position regularly rather than staying in bed for long periods. Keep a simple record of pain intensity, triggers, temperature, breathing symptoms, and new weakness. Do not add anti-inflammatory or other medicines without checking that they fit your medical history. The team may review the procedure, examine your spine and chest, and decide whether imaging or a different explanation should be considered. Vertebroplasty is another spine procedure, but it is not a self-treatment alternative.

Seek urgent help for sudden shortness of breath, chest pressure, coughing blood, fainting, blue lips, or severe chest pain. Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing pain, fever, wound drainage, new leg weakness or numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or pain that is not responding to the agreed plan. Do not wait for a routine appointment when these symptoms appear.
