What should you know about rhinophyma in females?

Rhinophyma is an enlargement and thickening of nasal skin, often with visible pores, oiliness, redness, or a heavier-looking tip. Although it is discussed more often in male patients, females can develop it too. A female patient with nasal thickening should not have the concern dismissed because of gender.

Rosacea may be present as flushing, persistent redness, burning, sensitivity, or bumps, but the nose change can also have another explanation. A clinical examination separates rhinophyma from acne, sebaceous growths, dermatitis, infection, and suspicious lesions.

Book a dermatology assessment if the nose is gradually changing, especially when the surface becomes uneven or pores appear larger. Bring a list of skincare products and describe flushing, irritation, and changes over time. Gentle cleansing, moisturiser, and sun protection can limit irritation while you wait; avoid picking or aggressive scrubs.

Treatment depends on tissue thickness and personal goals. Managing associated Rosacea may address inflammation, while CO2 Laser Resurfacing or Electrosurgery may be discussed when excess tissue affects shape, comfort, or confidence. Ask about wound care and expected healing before choosing a procedure.

Arrange prompt review for rapid growth, bleeding, an ulcer, a persistent crust, a new dark or irregular area, or significant pain. Fever, pus, or spreading swelling requires urgent care. These signs can indicate infection or a separate skin problem and should not be explained away as rhinophyma.

Ask how the diagnosis was made, whether a sample is needed, how rosacea symptoms will be managed, and whether treatment is intended to improve breathing, comfort, appearance, or several goals. Discuss scarring, pigment changes, healing time, and follow-up.
