Rheumatoid arthritis shoulder symptoms explained

Shoulder inflammation may make reaching overhead, dressing, turning in bed, or lifting an object uncomfortable. Pain can occur at rest or with movement, and stiffness may be more noticeable after inactivity. A shoulder problem can also involve muscles, tendons, the neck, or an injury, so the symptom pattern matters. Rheumatoid arthritis commonly affects more than one joint; tell your clinician about hand swelling, finger stiffness, and changes in other joints as well.

Keep the shoulder gently moving within a comfortable range and avoid repeatedly forcing overhead motion during a flare. Break tasks into smaller parts, keep frequently used items at an easy height, and use heat for stiffness if it feels soothing. A physiotherapist can assess posture, range of motion, and strength and provide exercises suited to your shoulder. Continue prescribed treatment and ask before using anti-inflammatory medication, especially if you have other medical conditions or take interacting medicines.

Seek urgent care for sudden severe shoulder pain after an injury, an obvious deformity, inability to move the arm, chest pain, breathlessness, or new weakness or numbness. Arrange prompt review for a hot, red, swollen shoulder with fever. Contact your care team when pain steadily increases, sleep is repeatedly disturbed, or movement is becoming more restricted despite your usual plan.
