Rheumatoid arthritis neuropathy symptoms: what to know

Inflamed or swollen tissues around a joint can place pressure on a nearby nerve. Symptoms may affect the hand, fingers, feet, or another area and can feel like pins and needles, electric shocks, burning, reduced sensation, clumsiness, or weakness. Carpal tunnel syndrome is one example of nerve compression near the wrist. Diabetes, vitamin problems, spinal conditions, injury, and some medicines can cause similar symptoms, so the sensation alone cannot identify the cause.

Notice whether symptoms are worse at night, linked to a particular position, or accompanied by joint swelling and stiffness. Record which fingers or toes are affected and whether grip, walking, or balance has changed.

Arrange an appointment with your rheumatology or primary-care team for persistent, spreading, or recurring numbness and tingling. The examination may check sensation, strength, reflexes, circulation, and joint inflammation. Depending on the findings, clinicians may consider blood tests, nerve studies, or imaging. Protect numb areas from heat, cuts, and pressure, and avoid tight splints or repetitive positions unless advised. Do not alter medicines without guidance.

Seek emergency help for sudden one-sided weakness or numbness, facial drooping, trouble speaking, severe breathing difficulty, or loss of bladder or bowel control. Get urgent advice for rapidly worsening weakness, inability to use a hand or walk safely, or a limb that becomes cold or changes colour. Prompt assessment can help prevent injury when sensation or strength is reduced.
