Rheumatoid arthritis and ear pain

The temporomandibular joints sit just in front of the ears and help the jaw open, close, and move side to side. Inflammation there can cause aching near the ear, jaw tenderness, clicking, limited opening, or pain while chewing. Ear infection, wax, dental problems, sinus symptoms, and muscle tension can feel similar. Rheumatoid Arthritis may also cause Finger Stiffness, Hand Swelling, Joint Pain, or Joint Swelling, but those symptoms do not prove that ear pain comes from the jaw or the condition.

Book a medical or dental assessment if pain lasts, returns, affects chewing, or occurs with jaw stiffness. The clinician may look in the ear, examine the teeth and jaw, check tenderness and movement, and decide whether further assessment is needed. Choose softer foods temporarily if chewing hurts, avoid gum and wide yawning, and use a warm or cool compress that feels comfortable. Do not put objects or unprescribed drops into the ear. Discuss an Anti-Inflammatory Medication only with a clinician who knows your medical history.

Seek urgent help for severe ear pain with high fever, swelling behind the ear, drainage, sudden hearing loss, facial weakness, severe dizziness, or a rapidly worsening headache. Emergency assessment is needed for confusion, fainting, or new weakness. These features can indicate an ear, neurological, or other problem that should not be treated as ordinary rheumatoid arthritis pain.

Ask whether the ear appears healthy, whether jaw movement reproduces the pain, and whether dental or ear assessment is needed. Mention clicking, locking, chewing difficulty, hearing change, fever, and any change in your rheumatoid arthritis symptoms.
